Custom Kato N Scale FEF Greyhound withDCC & Sound (Kinda)

Offered is my N Scale Kato FEF 4-8-4 locomotive painted in the iconic UP “Greyhound” scheme and fitted with a Soundtraxx Tsunami II sound decoder with a “sugarcube” speaker. Note: The dcc sound decoder has an issue which I discovered when listing the locomotive!!!!! . (It has worked fine for several years) but not now. The chuff sound works fine but the horn sound is acting weird. Sometimes it works fine but sometimes it sticks on. The bell sound works fine Dont know programming well enough to go in and reset things. It may be as simple as reprograming but maybe no. These locomotives were some of the last steam locomotives produced and are considered by many to be the pinnacle of steam locomotive design. UP still uses a restored FEF (#844) for promotional trips. I custom painted it in the Tu-Tone grey livery that UP used on passenger versions. The driver sidewalls were painted black as per the prototype and the greys were custom mixed by myself. I then applied Microscale decals to the locomotive and tender and sealed eveything with clear. (Tru_Color paints were used throughout). I installed a DCC decoder in the locomotive (TCS as I recall) and fitted a Soundtraxx Tsunami II sound decoder with “keep alive” and a “sugarcube” speaker in the tender. The sound is nothing short of incredible (IMHO) both from volume and quality standpoints. Please see the note on a sound decoder issue above!!! I chose to program a whistle sound that I like far better than the prototype’s “steamboat” whistle. Both decoders have 4700 programmed as their DCC address, as that is my assigned NTrak club address for shows. BTW the locomotive also runs on DC but not as smoothly as DCC. There are a number of CVs that can be set to enable more functions for analog operation. While not perfect the painting and decal work looks quite nice and along with the incredible sound it is a hit at trainshows and ellicits many positive comments. I would estimate that this locomotive has around 1 hour actual running time as it is only used at shows as I do not have a home layout. The photo showing this model in front of the depot on my San Joaquin NTrak module set (with a bit of Photoshop enhancement) appeared in a recent issue on N Scale Magazine and no the scenery doesn’t go with the locomotive. This item has been graded per TCA standards C-7: Excellent. This brass locomotive and tender showcase exquisite detail! Areas have been lubricated that were accessible without having to remove the shell. The DCC address is cab #3829. Digitrax DH142 decoder is in the locomotive. The tender body/truck contacts have been cleaned. Bench test good in DC and DCC. This item has been custom weathered. There are a couple of minor scratches and paint imperfections. Even though there are some minor imperfections, this brass engine will make an impressive addition to any collection! The original box is included with the liner, which is in excellent condition. There is some foam damage on the sides of the bodies (more prevalent on the tender). Headlight lens is missing. Headlight bulb also does not work. There is no smoke unit. Appears all other details are intact. Engine and tender work with sound in DCC mode only. Engine has been upgraded with Digi-Trax DH123 for motor control only (up to 2amp Stall) and tender has Tsunami TSU-1000 for sound only. This engine can be run forward or reverse with straight DC power, but you will not have any sound. The engine has been tested, and runs properly in DCC (with sound) and DC (no sound). The 2-8-2 wheel arrangement – a 141 configuration according to the French who count axles rather than wheels – was the most common steam locomotive configuration to ride France’s rails. The most common was the 141R. But the 141P, the first steam engines designed by the DEL (office for development of steam engines) after that office was created in 1938 as part of the nationalization of the French railroads proved to be the best of the 141 designs. In an effort to reduce development and testing time, design engineers Chan and Chapelon refined the PLM railroad 141C-D-E’s design by utilizing higher boiler pressure, a longer smokebox and a reinforced frame and stoker. The new locomotive resulted in an initial order of 103 units in 1941 by SNCF, the French national railroad. That batch, due to the second World War and the subsequent invasion of France, was not completed until 1947. A second order of 215 engines was subsequently given to various French locomotive works. The last of the 318 141Ps were completed in 1952, the highest quantity of steam engines built according to a DEL design. Though the 141R was the most populous of the 2-8-2 mikado class found in France, the most powerful was the 318-strong 141P class. Boasting nearly 3,300 horsepower, the 141P was among the most efficient steam locomotives in the world thanks to their compound design. Burning 30% less fuel and using 40% less water than their 141R counterparts should have endeared them to the railroads’ accountants, but they were unable to compete with the 141R when it came to reliability attested by the fact that all 318 units were scrapped while the 141R remained in service until the end of the steam era in 1975. Interestingly, the more common 1,340 141R units were ordered and built from the shops of Lima Locomotive Works, American Locomotive Company, Baldwin Locomotive Works, Montreal Locomotive Works and the Canadian Locomotive company at a rate of nearly three locomotives per day. Sixteen of the 141R’s never made it to France, sinking in a violent storm off the coast of Newfoundland in 1947. A seventeenth unit was lost in Marseille Harbor. The 141P marks the third French locomotive to be released by M. Electric Trains following on the heels of the 231 Chapelon and Class 241A. Outfitted with Proto-Sound 3.0, the 141P can operate conventionally under AC or DC power or in command mode under DCC or DCS control. This is a brand new. HO Scale 4-6-6-4 Challenger Steam Locomotive with Factory-Installed DCC & Tsunami Sound in the Rio Grande paint scheme. The locomotive number is 3805 (Item #G97230). This stunning reproduction of the 4-6-6-4 Challenger is the result of a focused determination to accomplish one thing: create the finest operating miniature representation of the prototype available. To say Athearn has succeeded would be an understatement. Giving life to all the details are authentic sounds that are channeled through a factory installed DCC and soundboard with speakers. The DCC decoder automatically senses what type of power supply is in use (conventional DC or NMRA compliant DCC) and adapts its functions. The modeler doesn’t have to do a thing. The Genesis 4-6-6-4 Challenger includes a history book and instruction book for quick reference. Boiler backhead with printed manual controls.
