Eventually the raked smokeboxes were replaced with conventional smokeboxes, so that by late 1958 the majority of the fleet showed a similar appearance for the first time. Duchess of Montrose entered service in 1938 in the LMS’ well known Crimson Lake livery being numbered 6232. It would wear this livery and number for the entire time it would serve with the LMS before being adopted into BR as 46232 in 1947.
