Rare Rivarossi 0339 German DRG Henschel-Wegmann-Zug Train Pack VNMIB – HO Scale. Superb boxed example of the iconic retro Rivarossi Henschel Wegmann streamlined express steam train pack, as would have been operated from 1936 between Berlin and Dresden. Conceived by the company in response to the growing success of the Deutsche Reichsbahn’s high speed diesel multiple units, Henschel Wegmann sought to demonstrate to the DRG that a steam based platform could deliver similar performance at a lower cost. The original train comprised a Class 61 4-6-4T steam locomotive two observation cars and two centre coaches, so in this respect the Rivarossi set faithfully reproduces the formation of the prototype. It was designed to be operated in a push-pull configuration, with a top speed of around 110mph. First appearing as a new product in the 1987 model year, it continued in production until approximately 1993/94, so was not an especially long-lived model by the company’s standards of the time. This particular version appears to date to around 1991/92. Two versions were made, a 3-rail AC set with product number 0389, and this more desirable DC 2-rail set with product number 0339. Technical design was unusual and highly intricate, with sprung panels on the side skirts of both the loco and coaches to enable curves to be negotiated whilst maintaining the sleek streamlined appearance. The units are coupled together via an unusual combination of downward facing NEM pockets with 90 degree oriented coupling bars as shown. Coupling the set together does take a little care so please keep this in mind. General cosmetic condition of the set is very near mint. There is little sign of any track running marks on the steel wheel rims – the loco even retains its Rivarossi product tag as shown. Colours are vibrant and we cannot see any noticeable marks or scratches anywhere on any of the coaches. It is as good an example from the period as you are ever likely to find. Loco has been track tested and is in full working order. Please see all photos for details. Will be carefully packaged for dispatch via tracked service.
