Bachmann G Scale Spectrum #81198 Ely Thomas 36T, 2 Truck Shay Engine, OB. It has been tested and runs. The overall condition is excellent, it is very clean and the paint looks great. It doesn’t look like this locomotive had much rail time, it must have spent most of it’s life in the box. The cowcatcher under the coupler is detached on 1 side. (See photo) and a tiny hook under the cab number 5 needs to be re-attached as well. (See photo) A drop of a good plastic glue and a steady hand will easily re-attach them. The front and rear directional headlights both work as designed. The original box has minor shelf wear. Lubrication is very important! The Bachmann video for lubrication instruction is included in the box. This is a very detailed, nice looking locomotive. Modeled after the Two-Truck Shay Locomotive that was built in the 1920s, this type of engine was used by many lumber, mining, quarry company railroads, other industrial railroads, a few common carrier short lines and major railroad systems for service in the logging and milling industries. This model features a diecast frame and boiler, drive shaft detail, operating drive-shaft, directional lighting, all wheel drive and electrical pick-up, separately applied grab irons, prototypical painting and lettering, AccuMate(R) knuckle couplers, DCC-capable motor isolated from frame. Like the prototypes, these locomotives can negotiate very sharp curves down to a minimum radius of 9-3/4. Locomotive was seldom used on an incomplete layout in a smoke free environment. Here is an Accucraft AC77-201 1:20.3 Scale Open Cab Live Steam Shay Locomotive. This item features metal constructi… This item has been graded per TCA standards C-7: Excellent. This locomotive is in incredible condition! There are a couple of minor scuff marks on the roof and one on the side of the engine. Even though there are a couple of faint imperfections, this locomotive will make an impressive addition to any collection! The original box is not included. There is a certificate included. Check the photos for a detailed look at this item. Overall condition is Excellent. Accucraft AC77-201 1:20.3 Scale Open Cab Live Steam Shay Locomotive EX. This item features metal construction, motor, and metal wheels. Please see my pictures for additional features. Shay locomotives were developed by Ephraim Shay. His first successful engine that we would recognize today as a Shay locomotive was produced in 1880 by Lima Machine Works (later, Lima Locomotive Works), who would go on to produce approximately 2,700 up until 1945, when production ceased. Shay locomotives are unusual in that they are powered by a steam engine of either two or three cylinders mounted vertically near the cab on the right side of the locomotive (although there were a very few with the engine on the left). The boiler was offset on the frame to counterbalance the weight of the engine. The engine drove a drive shaft that, through flexible couplings, turned bevel gears that engaged the wheels. This type of engine is known as a geared engine, since the wheels turn at a different rate from the engine, due to the gear ratio. This arrangement made the engine very flexible and able to negotiate raggedy track without derailing. Because of this characteristic as well as its great power, it was an exceeding popular engine with logging companies and other industries that relied on tough engines in unforgiving situations. INCLUDED ARE MANY CASTINGS AND GEARS WHICH ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. BELOW IS A DESCRIPTION OF THE CONDITION, PROGRESS AND STATUS OF EACH ASSEMBLY. A LITTLE HISTORY – THIS LOCOMOTIVE WAS STARTED BY A FRIEND OF MINE WHO PASSED AWAY. I HAVE WORKED ON THE PROJECT, MOSTLY THE FRAME AND TRUCKS, TO GET IT TO THE POINT IT IS AT TODAY. THE FRAME – IT WAS MADE BY THE ORIGINAL BUILDER AND HAD A NUMBER OF ISSUES. I CORRECTED ALL THE PROBLEMS AND PAINTED IT AND IT IS NOW COMPLETE AND READY TO GO. THE TRUCKS – THERE ARE 2 SETS OF TRUCKS, THE ONES THAT THE ORIGINAL BUILDER MADE AND THE NEW ONES THAT I HAVE STARTED. THE ORIGINAL TRUCKS WERE BUILT FOR DISPLAY ONLY AND HAD ISSUES SO I DECIDED TO START OVER AND BUILD NEW TRUCKS. THE SOLID WHEELS CAN NOW BE USED FOR FUTURE ROLLING STOCK. FORTUNATELY ALL THE GEARS NEEDED ARE INCLUDED AS THEY ARE NOW NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THE ENGINE – THE 3 CYLINDER ENGINE WAS MADE BY THE ORIGINAL BUILDER AND IS OF VERY GOOD QUALITY. IT IS MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN THE TRUCKS AND LOOK LIKE THEY WERE MADE TO ACTUALLY OPERATE ON LIVE STEAM. I HAVE ONLY LOOKED AT THESE AND NOT DONE ANY WORK ON THEM. THE PISTONS AND CYLINDERS AND THE SLIDE VALVES ARE BUILT. THE RODS ARE STARTED OR DONE. THE CRANKSHAFT IS DONE BUT MAY HAVE ISSUES. OVERALL IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF THIS IS MADE VERY WELL AND USABLE BUT EXPECT THAT SOME THINGS COULD NEED TO BE FIXED OR MADE NEW. THE REMAINDER – THERE ARE MANY ADDITIONAL PIECES THAT HAVE BEEN EITHER STARTED OR PRETTY MUCH READY TO USE SUCH AS THE UNIVERAL JOINTS, LEVERS, AND MODRE. Here we have a 16mm scale, 32mm gauge Live Steam Shay Locomotive. The loco is a twin cylinder oscillator, the boiler is gas fired (burner set up looks Roundhouse). Its believed the loco was built by Larry Cheeseman from Bedfordshire. The loco works well both in forward and reverse (direction control at top of engine unit) very good mechanical condition, although could do with a tidy up. Cab features steam regulator, pressure gauge and displacement lubricator. Below is a YouTube video with the loco in steam with the burner turned down. Happy for the loco to be picked up due to size and weight, based in North Surrey.
