Not quite satisfied with your order? In operation for over 50 years, Rails of Sheffield has grown to become one of Europe’s largest award winning model railway retailers and an industry leader. Despite five decades of growth and its transformation into an award-winning national and international retailer, Rails has seen rapid expansion in recent years. In 2022, to meet the increasing demand of the ever-growing model railway industry, Rails moved into larger warehouse and office spaces in Dronfield, Derbyshire. Their partnership with the National Railway Museum, Railway Icons and various manufacturers continues to flourish, with multiple exclusive locomotives and rolling stock being designed and developed throughout the year. Now, as we step into 2025, Rails remains the leading name in the model railway industry, with exciting plans for further expansion and continued dedication to serving model railway enthusiasts and hobbyists from South Yorkshire and beyond! A BRIEF HISTORY RAILS ORIGINS 1970. Working from the back of Hedley’s shop on Holmesdale Road, Dronfield on the southern outskirts of Sheffield, interest grew steadily throughout the decade and by the early-1980s, Rails was a fixture at toy fairs and swap meets such as the regular Buxton Pavilion Fair. Between then and 2000, the team regularly attended thousands of events across the UK – building a loyal customer base. LAUNCHING THE STORE 1980. With a growing legion of regular customers building up, a’proper’ shop was required, and Rails moved to Chesterfield Road in Heeley Bottom, a few doors away from the current shop. Rails moved to another shop on Chesterfield Road and established the first part of its permanent base. In 1996, the neighbouring shop unit was acquired and a period of rapid expansion followed. Rails then launched its first website and was pioneering online model railway retail for both new and second hand items. The late-1990s also saw the growth of the’limited edition’ business – with many exclusive liveries commissioned from major manufacturers. Rapid Expansion – 2000. To feed this expanding business, the Barber family scoured the country (and sometimes further afield) acquiring model railway collections. A New Era – 2010. Sadly, Hedley Barber passed away on August 11th 2015, leaving his son John and grandsons Adam and Oliver and John’s wife Tracy to manage the company he founded, with support of other family members and long serving staff. Remaining a family operated business, Rails continued to thrive in the late 2010s. A major milestone was the opening of the impressive show room in 2018, which features beautiful displays of popular locomotives and rolling stock frames amongst real Sheffield steel, stone walling and natural material. This was the catalyst for the refurbishment of the entire’front of house’ shop now occupying five formerly separate units. Rails also branched out into the new areas such as commissioning its own exclusive model product under the new’Rails Limited’ brand, bringing new model to the public such as the Stroudley’Terrier’ steam locomotive with Dapol and North Eastern Railway Electric Autocrat with Heljan. In 2021, Rails opened it all new purpose-built warehouse and offices in Dronfield. The multi-million pound development enable Rails to move all warehousing and administration to this new site to streamline the business and continue to provide customers with the top-tier service they had become accustomed to. In January 2024, Rails acquired Hatton’s Model Railways following its unfortunate closure after many years. Committed to preserving the Hatton’s legacy, Rails is integrating customers with the beloved Hatton’s Directory & product database. Later in 2024, Rails launched the Vintage Toy Shop, showcasing a treasure trove of rare collectables in Sheffield. Rails remains deeply connected to the South Yorkshire community it was established to serve. A True Home-grown Family Business. Learn more about us. Bachmann 32-084A 32-084A GWR 56XX Tank 5684 GWR Green (GWR) Steam Locomotive. The 56XX 0-6-2 Tank Locomotives were some of the GWR’s finest workhorses and we’re delighted to welcome OO Scale models of these popular machines back to the Bachmann Branchline range. The prototype’s aura of strength and ruggedness comes across in the Branchline model which packs a punch thanks to the substantial use of diecast metal in the chassis and bunker, ensuring that this smooth-running machine can pull significant loads. Meanwhile the bodyshell is produced from precision moulded plastic components to which separate details are fitted, like the metal handrails, intricate lubricators, tank ventilators and sprung metal buffers. The chassis, powered by a substantial 3 pole motor, carries an 8 pin DCC decoder socket and is adorned with details like the springs, brake blocks, brake rigging and sand boxes – accompanied by separate wire sandpipes. Completing the package is the livery application of rich paintwork adorned with finely printed lettering and numbering to portray the iconic GWR livery at its finest. Bachmann Branchline OO Scale. When the’Big Four’ railway companies were created at the Grouping in 1923, the Great Western Railway (GWR) absorbed most of the lines in South Wales. Here, many railways had been established to serve the coal mines and steel works, and to work these routes, strong and steady locomotives were required. Each of the pre-grouping companies had developed their own locomotives to take on this work, and most favoured tank engines with a 0-6-2 wheel formation. Powerful and sure of foot, the 0-6-2Ts were well suited to working the undulating routes and sharply curved lines that linked the pits and works with the docks. The locomotives did not need to exhibit high top speeds, nor did they travel great distances and so large tanks and coal bunkers were not a necessity either. The Great Western Railway recognised the merits and success of the existing locomotives, but with standardisation in mind the GWR set on designing its own 0-6-2Ts to replace the varied collection of locomotives that it had inherited. Designed by Charles Collett, the first 56XX entered traffic in 1924, just a year after Grouping, and 200 examples would be built before construction ended in 1928. The locomotives proved very successful and all were still in traffic come Nationalisation in 1948, with BR inheriting a fleet of 200 locomotives that would go on to serve them for well over a decade before the first examples were finally withdrawn in 1962. Steam on the Western Region officially ended in 1965, signalling the end of the 56XXs and many would end up at the famous Woodham Brothers Scrapyard in Barry, from which many of today’s preserved locomotives were saved. Nine members of the Class remain today, eight of which came from Woodham’s. Please note this is not a guaranteed service and parcels may take longer to arrive. Learn more about us. EFE Rail E85705 E85705 Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0 Tank Green (1700’Wissington’) Steam Locomotive. Voted as model of the year by readers of Model Rail Magazine and RMweb, the Hudswell Clarke certainly packs a punch for such a small locomotive, with its high level of detailing, and smooth and powerful performance thanks to its impressive weight – resulting from the high use of diecast components in its construction. Boasting finescale wheels and with a sprung rear wheelset, the Hudswell Clarke will navigate O gauge track with ease, collecting power from each of the six wheels. Between the sprung metal buffers is a sprung drawgear which is fitted with three-link couplings. The powerful five pole motor is fitted with a large flywheel driving the centre wheelset via a precision 40:1 gearbox, meanwhile DCC provision comes in the form of a 8 Pin decoder socket and space and connections are provided for those wishing to fit a speaker and sound decoder. The highly detailed bodyshell is adorned with numerous separate components, from the handrails and lamp irons to the whistle and safety valves, and the detailing continues inside the cab which includes controls and dials. The livery application is executed precisely, extending to the cab interior and the underframe too, where components like the wheels and sandboxes are decorated accordingly to give each model a neat, uniform appearance. For that little bit extra, each model is supplied with a set of loco tools, including shovels, picks, rakes and prickers, plus a bucket and oil cans to help you personalise your Hudswell Clarke Tank. Hudswell Clarke was formed in Leeds in 1860 by William S Hudswell and John Clarke, initially building stationary steam engines before moving on to construct locomotives. The steam locomotives built by Hudswell Clarke were generally on the smaller side, for contractor and industrial use, and hundreds were produced; 1,807 examples had been outshopped when the final locomotive was completed in 1961. The origins of the 0-6-0 Tank can be traced back to 1888 when the first of a new class of 24 Ton standard contractor’s industrial tank locomotives rolled off the production line and construction of the type continued until 1946 by which time a total of 88 had been built. The design was tweaked over the years and the model represents the type as built from the late-1920s through to the mid-1930s. The locomotives were built for contractors like Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons, who used them on the construction of Watford bypass amongst other projects. Something a little different for me. If you follow my lisings please note this is NOT 009. This is GN15, intended as outdoor narrowgauge running on OO track. Although I guess you could run indoors if you have the space. As you can see this one is built and painted and sits on a modified “Hornby Smokey Joe ” chassis. This chassis has the original motor in it, has been tested and runs well. Included with the loco is a brand new 5 pole motor, should you wish to upgrade it but will leave that to you to do. Will be very well packaged for its journey to you.
