BR Merchant Navy Class United States Lines Model Steam Locomotive 176 Scale
BR Merchant Navy Class United States Lines Model Steam Locomotive 1:76 Scale. Mainly designed from the Brighton Works Drawing Office, under C. S Cocks, Bulleid, always aware of the practical applications and costing implications ensured that the best design practices of the time were applied to the new locomotive. Like his mentor, Nigel Gresley, Bulleid was a technically arrogant CME, an advocate for locomotives being driven hard and to brisk schedules and this materialised in his design ideas. In 1934, Bullied had been opposed to the use of streamlining but for the Merchant Navy’s’air-smoothed’ design is suited his purposes, being easy to clean mechanically and hiding the boiler’s external pipes, which in turn meant that they could be run for function, rather than aesthetics. Opting for a welded steel firebox, instead of traditional copper construction for reduced weight and pressure benefits, Bulleid was able to make the three equally sized cylinders smaller, at 18′, and better balanced. New X-ray inspection techniques were specifically developed to monitor wear to the welded areas, whilst the newly designed Bulleid Firth Brown 6 2′ driving wheels reduced the amount of hammer blow to the rails, also resulting in less wear. Of all the new features Bulleid incorporated into the design, perhaps the most ingenious and, ultimately, most controversial was his decision to totally enclose the valve motion in an oil bath to prevent attritional wear through grit ingress. Despite the onset of war in 1939, Bullied’s design was accepted by the wartime Railway Executive Committee and production commenced though November 1940 at Eastleigh Works. The first member of the class, Channel Packet, was introduced in June of 1941 as the rather complicatedly numbered 21C1. Only 20 locomotives would be built under the SR, with a further 10 being built by BR entering straight into their service between 1948 and 1949. The last of the locomotives would be withdrawn towards the end of steam on BR in July of 1967. Locomotive 35012 entered service with the Southern Railway in January 1945 with the palindromic locomotive’number’ 21C12. It would gain its more conventional number under BR before being rebuilt by the nationalised operator in February 1957, making it one of the first examples to be rebuilt. The locomotive would go on to serve under BR, mainly on the former Southern region before being withdrawn in April 1967. United States Lines would be scrapped in Newport shortly after. The Hornby Merchant Navy is fitted with a powerful five pole motor and a large flywheel providing excellent performance. The locomotive if fitted with a fully detailed cab, tender pickups, NEM pockets front and rear and a 8 pin decoder socket. Item Length – Without Packaging (cm). Item Height – Without Packaging (cm). Product Listing – KATO N Scale C56 160 Steam Locomotive 2020-2. KATO N Scale C56 160 Steam Locomotive 2020-2. C56 160 is the last C56 and was active in various places during the JNR era. It was transferred to Umekoji Locomotive Depot in 1972 and has been preserved as a working locomotive to this day. It is famous as a steam locomotive that has never been scrapped (deregistered) along with C57 1. Since the JNR era, it has been operated all over the country, and has been operated in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Hokuriku, Shikoku, and also by the third sector. Since 1987, it has been active mainly on the Yamaguchi Line as the SL “Yamaguchi”, and has been seen in double-headed operation with C57 1 and DD51. Since 1995, it has been operated several times a year as the towing engine of the “SL Kita Biwako”. In 2018, it was replaced by the D51 200, and it is no longer operated on the main line, but it is still in use to pull the “SL Steam” train that runs within the Kyoto Railway Museum. You can enjoy the C56 160, which was used to pull the “SL Kita Biwako” and “SL Yamaguchi” trains, in N gauge. Combine it with the “10-1820 12-series passenger car JR West specification 6-car set, ” which will be released at the same time, to recreate the “SL Kita Biwako” of yesteryear. Reproduced in 2018, when the train was about to be retired from main line operation. Reproduces the white stripes on the side of the running board, such as the gold-colored bands on each part, the differential, the edges of the inspection windows, and the edges of the cylinders. The body is reproduced in the same calm matte black as the D51 200. The headlight shape on the boiler side is a shield beam housed in an LP403-type case, the headlight on the tender side is an LP42, and the monitor camera attached to the bottom is also reproduced. Equipped with a coreless motor for smooth and stable running. The leading wheel reproduces a wheel with a missing spoke. Equipped as standard with a dummy coupler on the boiler side and an Arnold coupler on the tender side. Replacement knuckle coupler, Arnold coupler for multiple units, and knuckle coupler for multiple units are included. Headlights on both the boiler side and tender side light up. Various markings are beautifully printed. Selectable number plate: “C56 160 (black background)” “C56 160 (red background)”. Includes headmarks for “SL Kita Biwako (Summer)” and SL Yamaguchi. However, these locomotives fell well short of expectations in terms of performance and fuel consumption, so that after 85 units had been built, preference was given to the simpler two-cylinder type G82 (1’Dh2). A total of 846 locomotives of this type left the workshops of several German locomotive plants by 1928. The main areas of use were central and western Germany in the Cologne, Essen, Hanover, MĂĽnster, Altona, Magdeburg and Halle(Saale) directorates. After the Second World War, more than 500 class 5620-29 locomotives remained in the Federal Republic of Germany; by 1963, they had been displaced by other locomotive designs and retired. They could be observed in service with the DR in the German Democratic Republic until 1970, some of them as shunting locomotives with special steps on the right front of the locomotive.
