Lobaugh made all their own parts, even the motor has a Lobaugh name tag. They were the 1. To utilize 2 rail power pick-up from both the engine and the tender; thus, the wiring between the 2 units. They are very heavy units, for their day, with the engine weighing 6 lbs. And the tender at 2 lbs. The loco is set up to operate on 2 rail DC track; however according to the website mentioned above, it could be converted to 3 rail AC. I tested it on a test track and got no response. I tried switching the plug-ins and got no response. I removed the engine shell (2 screws in the rear and 1 screw in the front) and touched power leads directly to the motor. It hummed and acted like it wanted to turn; but, there was just not enough power. The motor is free, I could easily turn it by hand. The loco shows a fair amount of fine detail, especially for its age. I did notice some paint scratches and other flaws. Front right marker light is missing screw mounted bracket is still there. Left rear tender step is missing. Solder spill on tender axle from making a wire connection. Front engine truck has a solder repair at the left wheel. Light surface rust spots on tender wheels and axles. 3 engine brakes are missing. The website mentioned above says Lobaugh locos were considered mechanical masterpieces and many of todays scratch engine builders prefer parts from these locos. I dont think it would take much to restore this loco in lieu of using it for parts. Because of the size of this package 11-12 lbs. Check out my other listings by clicking on. NYC & StL 2-8-4 Berkshire Steam Engine and Tender. I have to be honest. I love the looks of this engine, but not sure why it’s called Golden Spike? I thought that was reserved for the first 4-4-0 that made it’s way across the United States. This is a large set. It is new, but was displayed behind glass for most of it’s life. I cleaned the set the best I could, but did notice in the pictures that it’s still a little dusty in the cab and front detail areas. I programmed this engine into my remote and did a quick spin and it worked great. The system information states this engine has. 5 scale miles on the odometer (I can supply a picture if interested). I wrote in my notes that this one had awesome big sound. Some Features of this Item. Precision Flywheel Equipped Motors. All Metal Wheels, Gears and Chassis. Operates on O-54 Curves.
