Learn more about us. Hornby R30453 Coronation Class 4-6-2 LMS Streamlined No. 6247’City of Liverpool’ (WWII 80th Anniversary Collection) Steam Locomotive. Finished in black wartime livery, Hornby’s LMS Streamlined Coronation Class 6247’City of Liverpool’ joins the Victory in Europe 80th Anniversary Collection – capturing the power and presence of one of Stanier’s most impressive express locomotives during the Second World War. This finely detailed 00 gauge model is DCC-ready with a 21-pin socket, offering easy digital conversion for enhanced performance and control. With its distinctive streamlined casing and wartime finish,’City of Liverpool’ is a commanding addition to any steam-era layout. Emerging from Crewe Works in September 1943 complete with’bathtub’ streamlining during the war years, the locomotive went straight to Camden shed for working London Euston-Glasgow expresses wearing plain black livery, which was normal practice during the Second World War. After just four years, its streamlined casing was removed, in June 1947 and, instead, the locomotive was fitted with smoke deflectors and painted in lined black LMS livery. Its sloping’semi’ smokebox wasn’t replaced until September 1956, and it was withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor in June 1963 as BR lined maroon 46427 and scrapped during July. 1x Model Steam Locomotive. 1x Accessories Pack (includes drain cocks, brake rods, buffer lamps, front ladder, vacuum pipes, coupling bars and hooks and flanged rear pony truck wheelset). Not quite satisfied with your order? In operation for over 50 years, Rails of Sheffield has grown to become one of Europe’s largest award winning model railway retailers and an industry leader. Despite five decades of growth and its transformation into an award-winning national and international retailer, Rails has seen rapid expansion in recent years. In 2022, to meet the increasing demand of the ever-growing model railway industry, Rails moved into larger warehouse and office spaces in Dronfield, Derbyshire. Their partnership with the National Railway Museum, Railway Icons and various manufacturers continues to flourish, with multiple exclusive locomotives and rolling stock being designed and developed throughout the year. Now, as we step into 2025, Rails remains the leading name in the model railway industry, with exciting plans for further expansion and continued dedication to serving model railway enthusiasts and hobbyists from South Yorkshire and beyond! A BRIEF HISTORY RAILS ORIGINS 1970. Working from the back of Hedley’s shop on Holmesdale Road, Dronfield on the southern outskirts of Sheffield, interest grew steadily throughout the decade and by the early-1980s, Rails was a fixture at toy fairs and swap meets such as the regular Buxton Pavilion Fair. Between then and 2000, the team regularly attended thousands of events across the UK – building a loyal customer base. LAUNCHING THE STORE 1980. With a growing legion of regular customers building up, a’proper’ shop was required, and Rails moved to Chesterfield Road in Heeley Bottom, a few doors away from the current shop. Rails moved to another shop on Chesterfield Road and established the first part of its permanent base. In 1996, the neighbouring shop unit was acquired and a period of rapid expansion followed. Rails then launched its first website and was pioneering online model railway retail for both new and second hand items. The late-1990s also saw the growth of the’limited edition’ business – with many exclusive liveries commissioned from major manufacturers. Rapid Expansion – 2000. To feed this expanding business, the Barber family scoured the country (and sometimes further afield) acquiring model railway collections. A New Era – 2010. Sadly, Hedley Barber passed away on August 11th 2015, leaving his son John and grandsons Adam and Oliver and John’s wife Tracy to manage the company he founded, with support of other family members and long serving staff. Remaining a family operated business, Rails continued to thrive in the late 2010s. A major milestone was the opening of the impressive show room in 2018, which features beautiful displays of popular locomotives and rolling stock frames amongst real Sheffield steel, stone walling and natural material. This was the catalyst for the refurbishment of the entire’front of house’ shop now occupying five formerly separate units. Rails also branched out into the new areas such as commissioning its own exclusive model product under the new’Rails Limited’ brand, bringing new model to the public such as the Stroudley’Terrier’ steam locomotive with Dapol and North Eastern Railway Electric Autocrat with Heljan. In 2021, Rails opened it all new purpose-built warehouse and offices in Dronfield. The multi-million pound development enable Rails to move all warehousing and administration to this new site to streamline the business and continue to provide customers with the top-tier service they had become accustomed to. In January 2024, Rails acquired Hatton’s Model Railways following its unfortunate closure after many years. Committed to preserving the Hatton’s legacy, Rails is integrating customers with the beloved Hatton’s Directory & product database. Later in 2024, Rails launched the Vintage Toy Shop, showcasing a treasure trove of rare collectables in Sheffield. Rails remains deeply connected to the South Yorkshire community it was established to serve. A True Home-grown Family Business. While the A1 was a fantastic locomotive that served its purpose as intended, it became clear reasonably quickly that some modifications could be made that would greatly improve its performance. These modifications however were too significant to avoid reclassifying the locomotives and as such the A1 Felstead 2743 was the first to be withdrawn from service only a handful of years after it was introduced, emerging from its shed in August 1928 as the first A3’Super Pacific. The newly designated A3 locomotives had an improved boiler, larger cylinders and a conversion from right to left hand drive. 27 of the class were built as A3 locomotives from the get go, with all of the in service A1 examples being converted before 1950, the last such example to undergo this transformation was the then BR numbered 60068 Sir Visto. 2595 Trigo would enter LNER service in 1930, being one of the 27 A3 locomotives to never turn a wheel as an A1. The locomotive would go through the same short lived numbering pattern as its classmates carrying the number 84 for a short time before adopting its longer term BR number of 60084 on nationalisation. Along with all but one other member of the class, Trigo was unceremoniously scrapped in November 1964. Item Length – Without Packaging (cm). Item Height – Without Packaging (cm). LMS Princess Royal Class Turbomotive Model Steam Locomotive Railway 176 Scale
LMS Princess Royal Class Turbomotive Model Steam Locomotive Railway 1:76 Scale. The Turbomotive was an experimental steam locomotive built in 1935 by the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway (LMS) under the direction of Chief Mechanical Engineer William Stanier. Based on the successful Princess Royal Class design, the Turbomotive stood out for its use of a steam turbine instead of traditional reciprocating pistons. This turbine arrangement allowed for smoother, quieter running, and fewer mechanical parts, which theoretically meant reduced maintenance and greater reliability at sustained high speeds. It was especially efficient on long-distance, high-speed runs where constant power was required. However, the lack of a reliable reverse gear and reduced flexibility at lower speeds or for shunting limited its practical application. Despite promising performance, the complexities of turbine technology in rail use led to the project being discontinued. After World War II, in 1949, the Turbomotive was rebuilt as a conventional piston-driven locomotive, marking the end of Britain’s brief experiment with steam turbine propulsion in railways. Replacement 40 superheater boiler with regulator housed in separate dome. 4000 Gallon standard pattern Stanier Tender with roller bearings. Reverse Turbine modifications added. Model represents condition post 1936 modifications. Separately fitted nameplate, number plate and company ownership plate.
