HO Scale Akane 2-6-6-6 Chesapeake Ohio H8 Allegheny
HO scale H-8 coal monster for C&O. One of the most powerful steam locomotives ever built with a massive and likely highest recorded dynamometer HP from any steam locomotive. They built 60 in this class from 1941 with the need for high speed hauling of monster coal loads through the gradients of West Virginian mountains that gave them their class names of Allegheny and the cousin of the H-8 the Virginian Blue Ridge. The Alleghenies forged in Ohio surely are the peak of steam power. Two survived – 1604 and 1601 and the Henry Ford museum in Dearborn looks like a great place to visit as of course the Railroad museum in Roanoke, Virginia. This is an early model from Japanese maker Akane it’s been painted well and numbered as 1634. Check out the paperwork from 2002 with the receipt from Kelly Creek Backshop repair bill for the install of a new gear box (NWSL) Also unlike my other Akane H8 this has some great stamps in the box showing the builder, tester. Packager and final sign off from the 30th Nov 1961. Strong runner for a sixty year old and clearly been well cared for. My price on this model a chunk more than my other Akane H8 as that one needs a bit more attention on the bench than this one. And no one seems to have crudely drilled some speak holes in this tender! I love the story (fact) about how Lima (the folks that built these) were sued by staff working for C&O because they were paid in part by the weight of the locomotive they had to operate.
