HO gauge H-8 coal monster for C&O. One of the most powerful locomotives ever built hauling coal through the gradients of mountains that gave them their class names of Allegheny and the cousin of the H-8 the Virginian Blue Ridge. 1601 is still on display at Michigan and another at Roanoke. No wonder – such beasts that fought against the turn of diesel power. This is an early model from Japanese maker Akane it’s been painted and whilst not as detailed as my other H8 up for sale it’s way better than my O scale model that is also on my roster of things to repair one day. Have you tried to solder o scale with cheap irons – don’t! This one needs the frame motor repositioned in the cab as it’s loose and thus the traction through the rubber tube to the driving wheels isn’t getting the power. I haven’t checked under the cab but these models are not rocket science. One or two nicks and dints in the paint – also a small piece of coal from the tender load missing. Nothing I don’t think that should put anyone offs original box. I love the story (fact) about how Lima (the folks that built these) were sued by staff working for C&O because they were paid in part by the weight of the locomotive they had to operate.
