It was transferred to Umekoji Locomotive Depot in 1972 and has been preserved as a working locomotive to this day. It is famous as a steam locomotive that has never been scrapped (deregistered) along with C57 1. Since the JNR era, it has been operated all over the country, and has been operated in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Hokuriku, Shikoku, and also by the third sector.
