BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LOCOMOTIVE. The Union Pacific FEF Series consists of forty-five 4-8-4 “Northern” steam locomotive types built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1937 and 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad until 1959. The 45 locomotives were the last steam locomotives built for the Union Pacific. They represented the epitome of dual-service steam locomotive development; funds and research were being concentrated into the development of diesel-electric locomotives. Designed to burn coal, they were converted to run on fuel oil in 1946. They pulled a variety of passenger trains, such as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger, until diesel-electric locomotives took over passenger service. Four FEF Series locomotives survive today, including No. 844, which remains in operational condition and now runs in excursion service. Today, the 844 is one of the Union Pacific’s oldest serving locomotives[3] and the only steam locomotive never retired by a North American Class I railroad. WHATS INCLUDED WITH THE MODEL. AL88-118B Colorado & Southern. 71 Large Scale (1:20.3) 2-8-0 steam locomotive with tender and snow plow (electric version not live steam) Serial No. Heavy brass and steel construction. Model has had light use but is otherwise in great, original condition. Two minor issues: 1 a visor is missing above one of the cab windows and 2 most of the windows have come off and are loose or missing (not uncommon). Easily replaced by cutting new windows from thin acrylic sheet. Inner boxes included, one for locomotive and one for tender. Locomotive will be carefully packed in bubble wrap with foam under wheels and around snow plow to prevent damage (the snow plow on this one is perfect, not typically the case). I do not know what this means unless it is something to do with the fact that the loco has a Maxon motor and I understand that earlier models had a different motor that proved to be unsatisfactory.
