Bachmann 35-026A 94XX Class Pannier Tank 9481 BR Black Early Emblem
Bachmann 35-026A – 94XX Class Pannier Tank 9481 BR Black Early Emblem. A quintessential part of the GWR for many decades, the Pannier Tank design was developed and refined before the 94xx, the final design of GWR tank engine, was produced. Take a closer look at the Branchline model and you will see a wealth of detail, from the separately fitted pipe runs that extend all the way from the front bufferbeam to the back, to the modelling of the inside motion which is authentically decorated too. There are handrails aplenty – all separately fitted of course – whilst the metal lamp brackets, separate smokebox door dart and whilst with guard and supply pipes all catch the eye. Sprung buffers are fitted at the front and rear along with a copper cap to the chimney. Look inside the cab and a full complement of controls and dials is present, all decorated accordingly, which is only added to by the firebox lighting system which adds a further dimension of realism to every model. Technically the 94xx shines as well, with a Next18 DCC decoder socket paired with an integrated speaker making SOUND FITTED models an option if you wish to enjoy sound effects when operating your model railway. The powerful coreless motor drives the rear axle and electrical collection comes from all wheels, whilst each axle is fitted with a pair of separate metal bearings. MODEL FEATURES: Bachmann Branchline OO Scale Era 4 Pristine BR Black (Early Emblem) livery Running No. 9481 Accessory Pack NEM Coupling Pockets Sprung Buffers Powerful Coreless Motor Firebox Glow (on analogue) / Firebox Glow & Flicker (on DCC) Speaker Fitted Equipped with a Next18 DCC Decoder Socket – Recommend Decoder item No. 36-567B Length 138mm GWR 94XX CLASS HISTORY The distinctive 94XX Class 0-6-0 Pannier Tank was the last steam locomotive built by the Great Western Railway (GWR); the first ten being turned out in the company’s Middle Chrome Green by Swindon Works before nationalisation. Effectively a tank version of the Collett’2251′ tender engine, the remaining 200 locomotives were built for BR between 1949 and 1956 by outside contractors Robert Stephenson, Yorkshire Engine Co. Outshopped in unlined black livery, there were minor detail differences between the locomotives built by different contractors. All were capable of providing steam-heating for coaching stock. The design of the Class was unusual in that they were one of the few Pannier Tank designs with tapered boilers. Superheating was fitted to Nos. With the onset of modernisation and the introduction of an ever increasing number of diesels, the working life of the Class was very short and of the 210 built, just 78 were still in use in January 1964, withdrawals having commenced in 1959. By the end of June 1965, the last members of the Class were withdrawn with some examples being cut up when they were barely 5 years old. 9400 and 9466 survive in preservation. Impressive in both size and performance, the 9Fs’ lives were cut shockingly short with No. 92220’Evening Star’ – the 999th BR Standard to be built and the final steam locomotive outshopped by British Railways – entering traffic in 1960, only 4 years before the first examples were withdrawn. Evening Star’ itself did not fare much better and was withdrawn in March 1965 after just 60 months in traffic – thankfully the locomotive was saved for the National Collection. Despite the early withdrawals, some 9Fs continued in traffic until the final months of steam on British Rail and the last was withdrawn in June 1968. Bachmann 32-862 – BR Standard 9F Class (Tyne Dock) 92060 BR Black Late Crest (Weathered). The Tyne Dock 9Fs were some of the most powerful steam locomotives to have run in Britain and now these impressive locomotives are reproduced in OO scale for the first time. Taking the award winning Branchline 9F as our basis, new tooling has been produced to accurately model the ten locomotives that were fitted with Westinghouse Air Pumps and sent to Tyne Dock. Sporting a Plux22 DCC interface and pre-fitted speaker just like our standard 9Fs, this Tyne Dock example is a fitting tribute to one of BR’s most successful standard designs. The Tyne Dock 9Fs would see just ten years of service before their withdrawal and the locomotive depicted by this Bachmann Branchline model, No. 92060, is presented in a typically weathered, work stained condition befitting the fleet. The Branchline OO scale BR Standard Class 9F locomotive is an imposing model and with its high fidelity, exquisite detailing and powerful performance, it forms the perfect basis for our new Tyne Dock models. With an impressive weight and a presence befitting the strongest of BR’s standard steam locomotive classes, the Branchline 9F is a fine choice to haul prototypical trains on your model railway. Of the 251-strong fleet, ten locomotives were modified from the standard design and were fitted with Westinghouse Air Pumps. Entering traffic in 1956, these ten locos were sent to Tyne Dock in northeast England and were employed on iron ore trains between Tyne Dock and the Consett iron works. Along with the modified 9Fs, 56 ton bogie wagons had been built specifically for this service and these had air operated doors which allowed for quick unloading at Consett – it was these doors that the Westinghouse Air pumps operated. The’Tyne Dock’ 9Fs lasted in service for ten years before the final train was hauled in November 1966 by No. 92063 carrying a’Tyne Docker’ headboard. Despite the first 9Fs being withdrawn in 1964 and the Tyne Dock examples all having gone by 1966, some 9Fs continued in traffic until the final months of steam on British Rail and the last was withdrawn in June 1968. Most famous for their operation on the North Wales narrow gauge railways, the first Mainline Hunslet was built in 1882 by the Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds for the Penrhyn Quarry Railway. Named’Charles’, the locomotive’s somewhat unconventional appearance, with steeply inclined cylinders and connecting rods located on the inside of the coupling rods, would be repeated eleven years later when’Linda’ and’Blanche’ were constructed. Known affectionately by many enthusiasts as’the Ladies’, they were ostensibly built to the same 0-4-0 saddle tank design as’Charles’, although the’Ladies’ did incorporate some differences when compared to their elder. They had larger fire grates for one, round spectacle glasses in the front cab sheet rather than the square ones fitted to’Charles’ for another, and were also fractionally longer. Penrhyn Quarry was the largest slate quarry in the world at the end of the nineteenth century and the trio of Hunslets spent their days hauling slate trains over the Penrhyn main line from the vast quarry complex at Coed-y-Parc, near Bethesda, to Port Penrhyn, just a stone’s throw from Bangor on the North Wales coast. During their working lives the three locomotives underwent several changes, all gained full-height rear cab sheets, replacing the original half-height sheets, welded tanks were fitted in place of the original rivetted versions and various sandbox arrangements were seen, amongst other improvements during their time on the Penrhyn line. By the mid-twentieth century traffic on the Penrhyn Quarry Railway was in decline and in 1962 the last trains ran. Charles’ had already been retired in in the mid-1950s, but the Ladies worked on until the very end. Offered for sale upon closure of the railway,’Linda’ was quickly loaned to the Ffestiniog Railway, arriving there only three days after hauling her last train on the Penrhyn Quarry Railway. Both Ladies have been modified by the Ffestiniog Railway since their acquisition, most notably with the fitting of front pony wheels and tenders, becoming 2-4-0STTs (saddle tank tender engines), and their conversion to left hand drive. Blanche’ was paired with a temporary tender at first, one formerly belonging to an’England’ locomotive and which’Linda’ ran with until her new tender was built. Around 1965 a new tender was built for’Blanche’, complete with tender cab which utilised part of the cab back sheet originally fitted to’Blanche’ and upon completion, both locomotive and tender were painted into Ffestiniog Railway lined green livery. With a high risk of lineside fires and taking advantage of low oil prices the Ffestiniog fleet was converted to oil burning and’Blanche’ was so treated in 1971. She became a 2-4-0STT the following year and was fitted with new piston valve cylinders. The next major change came in 2014 when the locomotive reverted back to coal firing and since her latest overhaul in 2016/17’Blanche’ has been a stalwart of the locomotive fleet. To this day’Blanche’ still carries lined green livery. With 2023 marking 60 years since the pair were brought by the Ffestiniog Railway, they are unquestionably two of the most useful engines in the railway’s fleet and are as popular as ever with visitors, staff and volunteers alike. Charles’ was also offered for sale, but with the boiler condemned, the Ffestiniog Railway declined. Instead,’Charles’ was loaned to the National Trust and is now displayed at Penrhyn Castle – once the family home of the owners of Penrhyn Quarry. Sorry, our items are NOT available for pick-up.
