For much of the twentieth century, the Union Pacific had a love affair with massive, bigger-than-life locomotives. Some examples, like the Challenger and Big Boy, were great successes, while others like the gas turbines and DD40AX “Centennial” diesel were noble failures. One of the UP’s earliest and most successful big engines was the 9000-class 4-12-2, which boasted the longest rigid wheelbase of any American steam locomotive. The 9000s could haul a mile-long train at 50 mph, twice the speed of the Mallet articulateds they replaced. Known as a “Union Pacific” type for their wheel arrangement unique to the U. The 9000s were also the most successful three-cylinder rod locomotives ever built. The third cylinder was placed between the two outside cylinders and drove a rod connected to the second axle, which was shaped like a crankshaft rather than a straight axle. A pair of hinged rods driven off the outer cylinders, and clearly visible on the pilot in front of the cylinders, operated the third cylinder’s valve gear. The rest of the middle cylinder’s machinery, however, was not so visible or accessible, and tended to receive less than the optimal amount of attention from shop crews. Despite the maintenance headaches of the third cylinder, however, the 4-12-2s proved versatile and dependable. 9000 was saved from the scrapper and resides today at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona, CA. Returning for the first time since 2007, the 9000-class joins the other unique and massive UP power that has graced the Premier lineup. With smoother operation than any other model of this unique engine, our 4-12-2 will feature the wealth of added-on details you expect in a Premier locomotive – including operating third-cylinder valve gear on the pilot – and a correct six chuffs per driver revolution. 4-6-4 Blue Goose Hudson. Steam Engine and Tender. This is a very popular set. This example is new and looks great. I programmed this set into my remote and did a quick spin and it worked great and sounded awesome. The system information states this engine has 0.0 scale miles on the odometer (I can supply a picture if interested). As an additional note I wanted to point out that the pictures I took of this engine reflect the actual colors you see. I noticed on the MTH web page and other offerings with that same picture, it shows this engine a more light gray. I can’t speak for those pictures, but what I pictured in my listing clearly shows what you will receive. I don’t know if they offered this set in other colors but my blue goose is blue. Offered is this beautiful Delaware & Hudson Rwy Co. Alco RS2 with steam generator for passenger service. This locomotive is finished in the classic D&H lightning stripe scheme which unfortunately has now disappeared unless the EMD is still running around on the CP somewhere. The locomotive you will receive is the one pictured and it will come in its original box and is ready to run. Though I unwrapped it for the photos you will be the first one to open the throttle. Let me know what you are looking for and I see some more CNJ RSD4s and Cotton Belt RS3s in your future. I even found some Tiger Striped Southern Pacific RSD5’s. Kit Built BR Standard 2 2-6-0 Steam Locomotive. 78038 in BR lined Black Livery with Early Crest. This Loco is in Good Condition. The Loco is DCC Sound fitted. I do not know the make of the decoder as it is fitted in the boiler and I cannot easily gain access to have a look. The chuff is made from a sensor on the front wheel. The motor and gearbox are portescap. There is a step missing and a cab door. The paint could do with a bit of a tidy up where the corners have chipped a little. The loco has been tested and runs fine. The decoder is set to no. All payments must be in GBP (Pounds Sterling). Take a look at our other items.
