Introduced in the 1930s, the LMS, Stanier 5MT’Black 5′, 4-6-0, 5200 were known as the’Black Staniers’ due to their black livery. Later nicknamed’Black 5′, the mixed traffic locomotive was famous for the remarkable number of potential modifications. The’Black 5s’, were a mixed traffic locomotive, a’do-anything go-anywhere’ type, designed by Stanier and introduced in 1934. In their early days the locomotives were known as the’Black Staniers’ because of their black livery, but were later nicknamed’Black 5s’. Known for a truly staggering number of potential modifications, the Black 5 was the workhorse of the LMS and later BR from 1934 -1951.
