In the 1920’s, the Southern Pacific had a need for powerful locomotives, but found that the new articulated 2-8-8-2’s did not work well for them. They were a hazard to the crews when traveling through the long tunnels and snow sheds on their system. The exhaust fumes were capable of blinding and suffocating crew members, so to resolve this problem, the Southern Pacific decided to run in reverse. The next articulated engines from Baldwin were built with the cabs in the forward position. The SP went on to build many classes of these “Cab-Forwards”. BROADWAY LIMITED 4434 HO Streamline PRR K4 3768 1936 DGLE Lo Keystone Paragon3 Sound/DC/DCC. 4434 Streamlined PRR K4, #3768, 1936 Version, Later DGLE Paint, Low-mounted Keystone, 180P75 Tender, Paragon3 Sound/DC/DCC, HO SCALE. A number of K4s locomotives had streamlining applied over the years. All were later removed, restoring the locomotives to their original appearance. In February 1936, locomotive #3768 was clad in a shroud designed by famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy. This highly concealing, enveloping streamlined casing hid most of the functionality of the steam locomotive, leading to its nickname of The Torpedo by train crews. At first, the locomotive was not painted in standard Dark Green Locomotive Enamel (DGLE) but instead in a bronze color. It was later refinished in DGLE. A matching tender ran on unusual six-wheel trucks. Like most streamlined steam locomotives, the shrouds impeded maintenance and the covers over the wheels were later removed. For a time, the locomotive was the preferred engine for the Broadway Limited train. When moving forward from a stopped position, toots twice. When moving in reverse, toots three times.
