MTH Atlantic Coast Line. 4-8-4 Northern Steam Engine and Tender. This is a big, great looking engine. It looks awesome on my photo table. This example is new. I programmed this set into my remote and did a quick spin and it worked great and sounded awesome, but a little garbled. The system information states this engine has 2.1 scale miles on the odometer (I can supply a picture if interested). The sounds are a little garbled (very little) because the battery will need to be fully charged for the system to perform at 100%. This is very common for trains that were not used for a long period of time and the battery levels were not maintained. Some Features of this Item. Precision Flywheel Equipped Motor. All Metal Wheels, Gears and Chassis. Operates on O-72 Curves. Proto 2.0 with Digital Command Passenger Station Effects. (see picture of box end for full feature list). Manual Included in Box. This set is new, but I listed it as used because the battery has been depleted and it needs a new, fully charged battery installed to get all the functions to work properly. This engine came from a huge collection and spent it’s life behind glass and was never used and that is why the battery levels were not maintained. I programmed this monster into my remote and did a quick spin and it worked great, but the volume was very low and the sounds are garbled. This is normal for these older MTH engines if the battery levels are not properly maintained. The system information states this engine has 1.4 scale miles on the odometer (I can supply a picture if interested). This is an awesome looking, huge set. Some Features of this Item. 4-8-4 GS-2 Steam Engine and Tender. This set looks new to me, but I listed it as used because I noticed a small chip on the front of the tender, as-pictured. The sounds on this set are garbled and a new, fully charged battery is needed so the engine will perform properly. This set was part of a huge collection and spent it’s life behind glass and was never used. Because of this the battery was not kept charged and needs to be addressed for the system to perform properly. I programmed this set into my remote and did a quick spin and it worked great, but the sounds were garbled as noted above. The system information states this engine has. 5 scale miles on the odometer (I can supply a picture if interested). The inner factory wrapping was missing when I received this set so I wrapped the engine and tender in new tissue paper so that it is properly secured in the box and will show up in great condition. The large drivers gave the locomotive a high top speed; the telling mark of a steam engine built for passenger service. The GS-4 was built for the Southern Pacific Railroad by the Lima Locomotive Works and delivered in the early 1940s for the SPs premier passenger trains, finding its way to the Daylight series of name trains. One of the more unique specifications for the GS-4 by the SP was its Mars light, a necessity with the large amount of grade crossings and fog present on the West Coast. The Mars light, like ditch lights on modern locomotives, was utilized as a warning for grade crossings that a high speed train was approaching, its shifting light patterns serving as an eye catcher in foggy conditions. All Other Lights (On/Off). Handsome and powerful examples of steam’s last hurrah, the Reading’s thirty T-1 Northerns had a rather humble birth. The new engines retained the Reading’s characteristic wide Wooten firebox, originally designed for the hard, slow-burning culm that was readily available in the region as a cheap by-product of anthracite coal mining; by the 1940s, however, the Reading’s Wooten fireboxes had been converted to burn softer bituminous coal like the steamers on other American roads. While the T-1s served the Reading well until the end of steam in 1956, their real fame came after the railroad had dieselized. In 1959 the Reading revived an old tradition of “Reading Rambles” and, to the delight of railfans and the general public, began running steam-powered rambles through the Pennsylvania countryside. With three restored “T-hogs” and another as standby power, the Reading ran fifty rambles before the program ended in October, 1964. While all four engines survive to this day, the most famous of the group is no. A plaque on the engine, which now resides in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, MD, tells her story after the rambles:. She was saved from the scrapper’s torch by E. Striegel [a scrap dealer] of Baltimore, MD. Two hundred men and women, largely volunteers, rebuilt her in 32 days to pull the American Freedom Train. She is a living example of the finest in American mechanical genius. Dressed up in Chessie System colors, she served in excursion service until 1979, when she was badly damaged in a roundhouse fire. No longer road-worthy, the 2101 was cosmetically restored and retired to the B&O Museum. Designed from scale drawings supplied by the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society, our die-cast model features numerous added-on details, including opening sand dome hatches, as well as the accurate sound of a T-1 whistle. For 2014, the T-hogs return to the Premier lineup in the excursion colors they wore in the 1970s and beyond. The 2101 wears her Chessie Steam Special garb, and the 2102, rescued from the scrapper by Bill Benson of Steam Tours Inc. Wears the Reading, Allegheny Railroad, and Blue Mountain & Reading names she wore in fan trip service into the mid-1990s.
