THIS IS A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO GET A 3/4 SCALE (3 1/2 INCH GAUGE) KOZO HIRAOKA LIVE STEAM SHAY PROJECT. IT HAS BEEN PARTIALLY BUILT AND A FUN PROJECT FOR SOMEONE TO FINISH. INCLUDED ARE MANY CASTINGS AND GEARS WHICH ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. BELOW IS A DESCRIPTION OF THE CONDITION, PROGRESS AND STATUS OF EACH ASSEMBLY. A LITTLE HISTORY – THIS LOCOMOTIVE WAS STARTED BY A FRIEND OF MINE WHO PASSED AWAY. I HAVE WORKED ON THE PROJECT, MOSTLY THE FRAME AND TRUCKS, TO GET IT TO THE POINT IT IS AT TODAY. THE FRAME – IT WAS MADE BY THE ORIGINAL BUILDER AND HAD A NUMBER OF ISSUES. I CORRECTED ALL THE PROBLEMS AND PAINTED IT AND IT IS NOW COMPLETE AND READY TO GO. THE TRUCKS – THERE ARE 2 SETS OF TRUCKS, THE ONES THAT THE ORIGINAL BUILDER MADE AND THE NEW ONES THAT I HAVE STARTED. THE ORIGINAL TRUCKS WERE BUILT FOR DISPLAY ONLY AND HAD ISSUES SO I DECIDED TO START OVER AND BUILD NEW TRUCKS. THE SOLID WHEELS CAN NOW BE USED FOR FUTURE ROLLING STOCK. FORTUNATELY ALL THE GEARS NEEDED ARE INCLUDED AS THEY ARE NOW NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THE ENGINE – THE 3 CYLINDER ENGINE WAS MADE BY THE ORIGINAL BUILDER AND IS OF VERY GOOD QUALITY. IT IS MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN THE TRUCKS AND LOOK LIKE THEY WERE MADE TO ACTUALLY OPERATE ON LIVE STEAM. I HAVE ONLY LOOKED AT THESE AND NOT DONE ANY WORK ON THEM. THE PISTONS AND CYLINDERS AND THE SLIDE VALVES ARE BUILT. THE RODS ARE STARTED OR DONE. THE CRANKSHAFT IS DONE BUT MAY HAVE ISSUES. OVERALL IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF THIS IS MADE VERY WELL AND USABLE BUT EXPECT THAT SOME THINGS COULD NEED TO BE FIXED OR MADE NEW. THE REMAINDER – THERE ARE MANY ADDITIONAL PIECES THAT HAVE BEEN EITHER STARTED OR PRETTY MUCH READY TO USE SUCH AS THE UNIVERAL JOINTS, LEVERS, AND MODRE.
