Broadway Limited 6228 N Scale SOU Heavy Pacific 4-6-2 #1374. 6228 Heavy Pacific 4-6-2, SOU #1374, Sylvan Green, Paragon3 Sound/DC/DCC, N (NP) For the first time in N scale, BLI is bringing out the USRA Light and Heavy 4-6-2 steam locomotives, commonly called Light Pacifics and Heavy Pacifics! There were 20 original Heavy Pacifics built in 1919 for the USRA program, and all 20 went to Erie Railroad. From 1923, numerous copies were built, and many railroads operated similar locomotives. There were 81 original Light Pacifics built in 1919, and these were delivered to ACL, B&O, GTW, M&O (GM&O), and L&N. Subsequently, each of these railroads built copies, and several other railroads operated locomotives with similar dimensions and equipment. The Light Pacifics were limited to 54,000 lbs load per axle, versus 60,000 for the Heavy Pacifics, and this allowed the Light Pacifics to run on most main lines. Our Heavy and Light models follow the original designs closely. Railroad specific variations are not modeled on these locomotives. Many of the Pacifics used the same 10,000 gallon tender as the USRA Mikados, and our models uses this 10,000 gallon tender. In this production run, we will offer two locomotive numbers for each prototypical railroad. We are also building models of several similar 4-6-2 Pacifics in attractive paint schemes, and we will build one Christmas-themed engine painted in red, green, and gold. Additionally, we will offer one unlettered Heavy Pacific and one unlettered Light Pacific. Both are painted black, with graphite firebox and smokebox, and are ready to be decorated and run on any railroad you like. Broadway 6643 HO Scale Union Pacific 4-8-4 Paragon4 Sound/DC/DCC #838. The Northern type locomotives on the Union Pacific were built by Alco Schenectady Works in 3 classes between August 1937 and December 1944. The first class, designated FEF-1, for Four Eight Four, comprised numbers 800-819. These locomotives were equipped with 80-inch drivers and larger 14-wheel centipede style tenders with a 23,500 gallon capacity and were class FEF-2. In Dec 1944, 10 additional 4-8-4 locomotives were delivered, these equipped with low-backpressure double stacks, numbered 835-844, and designated FEF-3. All three classes developed 63,800 lbs of tractive effort. Throughout their service careers multiple modifications were made, including conversion to oil, feedwater heater systems, addition of smoke lifters (designated Wind Wings on UP drawings) and a Mars light, and replacement of stacks from singles to doubles and even triple stacks. The GS-4 runs on eight massive 80 drivers, 300lbs psi boiler pressure, and puts out a roaring 5,500 horsepower at 55mph, with a maximum speed of 110 mph. The large drivers gave the locomotive a high top speed; the telling mark of a steam engine built for passenger service. The GS-4 was built for the Southern Pacific Railroad by the Lima Locomotive Works and delivered in the early 1940’s for the SP’s premier passenger trains, finding its way to the Daylight series of name trains. One of the more unique specifications for the GS-4 by the SP was its Mars light, a necessity with the large amount of grade crossings and fog present on the West Coast. The Mars light, like ditch lights on modern locomotives, was utilized as a warning for grade crossings that a high speed train was approaching, its shifting light patterns serving as an eye catcher in foggy conditions. About the “American Freedom Train” GS-4 Scheme. From 1975 to 1976, in celebration of the United States’ 200th birthday, GS-4 #4449 was re-painted into a striking red, white, and blue paint scheme, and put into excursion duty pulling a special display train all around the United States. About the BNSF Excursion Black GS-4 Scheme. In 2000, the Daylight was repainted black and silver for a Burlington Northern Santa Fe employee appreciation special. This train excursion went through Seattle, Washington and then east into Montana before heading back to her home in Portland, Oregon. The GS-4 runs on eight massive 80 drivers. 300lbs psi boiler pressure, and puts out a roaring 5,500 horsepower at 55mph. With a maximum speed of 110 mph. The large drivers gave the locomotive a high top speed. The telling mark of a steam engine built for passenger service. The GS-4 was built for the Southern Pacific Railroad by the Lima Locomotive Works. And delivered in the early 1940s for the SP’s premier passenger trains. Finding its way to the Daylight series of name trains. One of the more unique specifications for the GS-4 by the SP was its Mars light.
