Kato 2016-D N Gauge Finished Model D51 498 Orient Express’88. Accessories: Replacement knuckle couplers. D51 498 was manufactured in 1940 and operated throughout Honshu. It was decommissioned in 1972 and preserved in front of Gokan Station on the Joetsu Line. Sixteen years later, in November 1988, it was restored to working order by JR East, resuming service as it did in its heyday. Its first train towed after its restoration was the then-famous “Orient Express’88, ” which was visiting Japan at the time. It stood in front of the main locomotive, EF58 61, for the final domestic train from Ueno Station to Omiya Station, operating in a double-headed configuration. Since then, it has mainly been used to pull event trains such as the “SL Minakami” on the Joetsu Line, and continues to operate as one of JR East’s flagship locomotives. This product is a re-release. This time, the leading and trailing truck wheels will be changed to spoked wheels with gaps between the spokes, the rods will be given a glossy chrome finish, and the crossheads and combination links will be changed to a more realistic color. Accordingly, the product number, price, and JAN code will change. Other specifications remain unchanged from the previous product. (1) The magnificent appearance when pulling the “Orient Express” is reproduced in detail. (2) Snowplow and water pipes at the rear of the cab are not equipped, and the red accents on the rods and the decorations on the side of the tender are reproduced. (3) A large number plate with the model name is attached, and the “Orient Express” headmark is included. (4) The driving wheels are silver, while the leading, trailing, and tender wheels are black-plated. Accurately recreates the atmosphere of the time of its restoration. (5) Just like the actual train, it depicts the gap between the boiler and frame, the wheel centers of the box-type driving wheels with holes, and the wheels of the leading and trailing trucks with missing spokes. (7) Coreless motor power unit enables stable running. (8) Arnold couplers are standard equipment on the tender side. Replacement knuckle couplers are included.
