The 2-8-2 wheel arrangement – a 141 configuration according to the French who count axles rather than wheels – was the most common steam locomotive configuration to ride France’s rails. The most common was the 141R. But the 141P, the first steam engines designed by the DEL (office for development of steam engines) after that office was created in 1938 as part of the nationalization of the French railroads proved to be the best of the 141 designs. In an effort to reduce development and testing time, design engineers Chan and Chapelon refined the PLM railroad 141C-D-E’s design by utilizing higher boiler pressure, a longer smokebox and a reinforced frame and stoker. The new locomotive resulted in an initial order of 103 units in 1941 by SNCF, the French national railroad. That batch, due to the second World War and the subsequent invasion of France, was not completed until 1947. A second order of 215 engines was subsequently given to various French locomotive works. The last of the 318 141Ps were completed in 1952, the highest quantity of steam engines built according to a DEL design. Though the 141R was the most populous of the 2-8-2 mikado class found in France, the most powerful was the 318-strong 141P class. Boasting nearly 3,300 horsepower, the 141P was among the most efficient steam locomotives in the world thanks to their compound design. Burning 30% less fuel and using 40% less water than their 141R counterparts should have endeared them to the railroads’ accountants, but they were unable to compete with the 141R when it came to reliability attested by the fact that all 318 units were scrapped while the 141R remained in service until the end of the steam era in 1975. Interestingly, the more common 1,340 141R units were ordered and built from the shops of Lima Locomotive Works, American Locomotive Company, Baldwin Locomotive Works, Montreal Locomotive Works and the Canadian Locomotive company at a rate of nearly three locomotives per day. Sixteen of the 141R’s never made it to France, sinking in a violent storm off the coast of Newfoundland in 1947. A seventeenth unit was lost in Marseille Harbor. The 141P marks the third French locomotive to be released by M. Electric Trains following on the heels of the 231 Chapelon and Class 241A. Outfitted with Proto-Sound 3.0, the 141P can operate conventionally under AC or DC power or in command mode under DCC or DCS control. Equipped with high-quality digital sound, LED contant voltage lighting, hi-rail or fine scale wheels and synchronized puffing smoke timed to the drive wheels’ revolutions ensures that the 141P will be a favorite on any O scale model railroad. For much of the twentieth century, the Union Pacific had a love affair with massive, bigger-than-life locomotives. Some examples, like the Challenger and Big Boy, were great successes, while others like the gas turbines and DD40AX “Centennial” diesel were noble failures. One of the UP’s earliest and most successful big engines was the 9000-class 4-12-2, which boasted the longest rigid wheelbase of any American steam locomotive. The 9000s could haul a mile-long train at 50 mph, twice the speed of the Mallet articulateds they replaced. Known as a “Union Pacific” type for their wheel arrangement unique to the U. The 9000s were also the most successful three-cylinder rod locomotives ever built. The third cylinder was placed between the two outside cylinders and drove a rod connected to the second axle, which was shaped like a crankshaft rather than a straight axle. A pair of hinged rods driven off the outer cylinders, and clearly visible on the pilot in front of the cylinders, operated the third cylinder’s valve gear. The rest of the middle cylinder’s machinery, however, was not so visible or accessible, and tended to receive less than the optimal amount of attention from shop crews. Despite the maintenance headaches of the third cylinder, however, the 4-12-2s proved versatile and dependable. 9000 was saved from the scrapper and resides today at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona, CA. Returning for the first time since 2007, the 9000-class joins the other unique and massive UP power that has graced the Premier lineup. With smoother operation than any other model of this unique engine, our 4-12-2 will feature the wealth of added-on details you expect in a Premier locomotive – including operating third-cylinder valve gear on the pilot – and a correct six chuffs per driver revolution. The new engines retained the Reading’s characteristic wide Wooten firebox, originally designed for the hard, slow-burning culm that was readily available in the region as a cheap by-product of anthracite coal mining; by the 1940s, however, the Reading’s Wooten fireboxes had been converted to burn softer bituminous coal like the steamers on other American roads. While the T-1s served the Reading well until the end of steam in 1956, their real fame came after the railroad had dieselized. In 1959 the Reading revived an old tradition of “Reading Rambles” and, to the delight of railfans and the general public, began running steam-powered rambles through the Pennsylvania countryside. With three restored “T-hogs” and another as standby power, the Reading ran fifty rambles before the program ended in October, 1964. While all four engines survive to this day, the most famous of the group is no. A plaque on the engine, which now resides in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, MD, tells her story after the rambles:. She was saved from the scrapper’s torch by E. Striegel [a scrap dealer] of Baltimore, MD. Two hundred men and women, largely volunteers, rebuilt her in 32 days to pull the American Freedom Train. She is a living example of the finest in American mechanical genius. Dressed up in Chessie System colors, she served in excursion service until 1979, when she was badly damaged in a roundhouse fire. No longer road-worthy, the 2101 was cosmetically restored and retired to the B&O Museum. Designed from scale drawings supplied by the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society, our die-cast model features numerous added-on details, including opening sand dome hatches, as well as the accurate sound of a T-1 whistle. For 2014, the T-hogs return to the Premier lineup in the excursion colors they wore in the 1970s and beyond. The 2101 wears her Chessie Steam Special garb, and the 2102, rescued from the scrapper by Bill Benson of Steam Tours Inc. Wears the Reading, Allegheny Railroad, and Blue Mountain & Reading names she wore in fan trip service into the mid-1990s.
