The Union Pacific Challengers were a type of simple articulated 4-6-6-4 steam locomotive built by American Locomotive Company for the Union Pacific. 105 of these locomotives were built between 1936 and 1943. The Challengers were about 122 ft (37 m) long and weighed 284,800 kg. A few were assigned to passenger trains operating through mountain territory to California and Oregon. The locomotives were built specifically for UP and much of the experience gained later went into the design of the famous Big Boy. The name Challenger was given to steam locomotives with a 4-6-6-4 wheel arrangement. This means that they have four wheels in the leading pilot truck, which helps guide the locomotive into curves, two sets of six driving wheels, and finally four trailing wheels, which support the rear of the engine and its massive firebox. Each set of six driving wheels is driven by two steam cylinders. In essence, the result is two engines under one boiler. The Union Pacific Railroad sponsored development of this type to meet the need for higher speeds in main-line service. Historically, articulated locomotives had been limited to slow speeds by factors inherent in their design. The technical breakthroughs achieved with the Challenger enabled the carrier to develop the Big Boy with the same speed expectations. Speeds in excess of 60 M. While unheard-of on other railroads using articulated steam locomotives, became commonplace on the Union Pacific. BROADWAY LIMITED 3634 N Scale PRR M1a 4-8-2 6735 Paragon3 Sound/DC/DCC. 3634 PRR M1a 4-8-2, #6735, Paragon3 Sound/DC/DCC, N Scale In 1930, the celebrated success of the M1 Mountain-type locomotives prompted the Pennsylvania Railroad to order 100 more locomotives of the 4-8-2 wheel arrangement. The new locomotives became the M1a class and had a longer wheelbase than the M1’s due to the addition of the Worthington feedwater heater. They also received new larger tenders, class 210F75, which became known as the coast-to-coast tenders. The first 50 M1a locomotives, #6700 – 6749, were built by Baldwin. The Juniata Shops, which became knows as the “Altoona Works, ” built the next 25 M1a’s numbered 6750 – 6774, and the remaining 25 M1a’s were built by Lima and were numbered 6775 – 6799. Starting in 1946, 41 of the M1as received further improvements by increasing the boiler pressure and adding circulators to the firebox. The improved M1as became the M1b class. The best way to tell them apart is to look for the circulators on the firebox just above the running boards. The circulators are those round objects in a diagonal line that look like wash-out plugs. The PRR M1a/bs were considered to be the finest of the PRR’s steam locomotives. And in the end, they even hauled the heavy ore trains, which there were not originally intended to pull. The New York Central was late in adopting the 4-8-4 wheel arrangement for their steam locomotive roster since the Mohawks and Hudsons did such an excellent job. Locomotive #6000 class S1a was the first 2-cylinder 4-8-4 from ALCO and was followed by 25 more of the S1b class. When the Northerns started arriving in 1945, they became the favorite power, being used almost everywhere at once. They were dual service locomotives but are mostly remembered for heading up the Limiteds.
